Yet the <g id=\"gid_0\">Japanese beetle<\/g><g id=\"gid_1\">(Popillia japonica<\/g>) is proving to be one of the most serious threats to agriculture and urban greenery in northern Italy. Since then, its spread has not stopped. Today, the beetle is also present in <strong>Piedmont<\/strong>, <strong>Emilia-Romagna<\/strong>, <strong>Veneto<\/strong> and parts of <strong>Liguria<\/strong>. Authorities fear it could spread to central and southern regions as well, taking advantage of the favorable climate and rich variety of cultivated plants.   <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a03957 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0a03957\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why is it so scary?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5c34863 color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5c34863\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The real danger of the Japanese beetle lies in its <strong>voracity<\/strong>. Adults feed on more than <g id=\"gid_1\">300 plant species<\/g>, affecting both agricultural crops and ornamental plants. Larvae, on the other hand, develop in the soil and attack the roots of grasses, compromising the health of lawns.  <\/p>\nA single female can lay <strong>up to 60 eggs<\/strong> in a single season. In grapevines, leaves are completely skeletonized, reducing the plant&#8217;s photosynthetic capacity. In corn and soybean fields, damage is observed that slows plant growth, while in orchards, massive defoliation is reported on apple, pear and cherry trees. Lawns appear yellowed, dry and difficult to recover. In pastures, this results in lost productivity and increased costs associated with reseeding and irrigation.  \n<h3>In the urban green<\/h3>\nEven public gardens and green spaces in cities are not immune. The beetle attacks ornamental trees such as maples, birches, limes and elms, as well as roses, flowering shrubs and English lawns. The damage, in addition to being aesthetic, results in higher costs for maintenance and management of public green spaces.  \n\n\n<h3>How to recognize it<\/h3>\n\nThe adult Japanese beetle has a body about an inch long, metallic green in color, with shiny copper-colored elytra. Among the options available on the market, the <strong>Popillia trapper<\/strong> stands out for being <strong>organic, poison-free and Italian-made<\/strong>. <\/p>\nThe trap is easy to use: it is hung about one meter above the ground in a sunny area and at least three meters away from the plants to be protected. Deep plowing can disrupt larvae development in the soil, while crop rotation with plants less liked by the beetle helps reduce pest pressure. Proper irrigation management, especially in the summer months, can help make the soil less conducive to larvae survival.  <\/p>\nResearch is also exploring natural methods such as using <strong>entomopathogenic nematodes<\/strong> or <strong>fungi such as Beauveria bassiana<\/strong>, as well as enhancing native predators.\n\nIn some cases, where permitted by regulation, treatments based on <strong>Azadirachtin<\/strong>, a natural neem extract, or chemical insecticides such as <strong>lambda-cyhalothrin<\/strong> or <strong>imidacloprid<\/strong> may be used, but their use remains very limited.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-66b5b74 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"66b5b74\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What the law says<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b5bc74 color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8b5bc74\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>According to <strong>EU Regulation 1143\/2014<\/strong>, <em>Popillia japonica<\/em> is considered an <strong>invasive alien species of EU significance.<\/strong> This implies specific obligations to monitor, contain and, where possible, eradicate the beetle. In Italy, the <strong>National Phytosanitary Service<\/strong> coordinates activities with the support of the regions.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef3a72f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ef3a72f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What citizens can do<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3326cf9 color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3326cf9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Individual citizens can also contribute to the fight against the Japanese beetle. Promptly reporting the presence of the beetle to the appropriate authorities is crucial.
