The Popillia japonica<\/strong> Newman (Popillia or Japanese beetle) is an extremely polyphagous scarab beetle that causes huge economic losses and requires high containment costs.<\/p>\n

Adults measure about 10 mm in length and have a metallic green body<\/strong> with copper-coloured elytra. The larvae are whitish, curved in a ‘C’ shape, and live in the soil by feeding on roots.<\/p>\n

The larvae attack the roots of herbaceous plants and lawns, causing damage to agricultural crops<\/strong> and turf.<\/p>\n

Adults, on the other hand, feed on flowers, leaves and fruits of over 300 plant species, leaving characteristic ‘reticulated’ erosions<\/strong> on the leaf blades. <\/p>\n

Trap placement for Popillia Japonica<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

To be most effective, the trap should be placed no less than 3 metres downwind<\/strong> of the plants to be protected in order to intercept beetles heading towards it. Do not place the trap on or near the plant as it will attract more beetles into the foliage. The optimal height for positioning is about 1 metre.<\/p>\n

Trap<\/strong>maintenance <\/strong>for Popillia Japonica<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

During the period of activity of the insect(June – September<\/strong>) it is recommended to check the traps regularly and empty the container before it is completely full. The collection bag can be replaced or emptied carefully. To increase effectiveness, periodically clean the trap of any residue and replace the bait every 4-6 weeks.<\/p>\n
